Holiday Spending: How Not to Blow Your Budget

Otmane El Rhazi from USA.gov.

By Katie Bryan, America Saves

Almost everything you see this holiday season will encourage you to spend money. You may feel pressured to buy the “best” gifts or top gift giving from previous years. In fact, according to the Consumer Federation of America, 1/3 of us planned on spending more during the holidays than we did in years past.

I’m here to tell you that you absolutely do not need to blow your budget this holiday season. Let’s make a commitment right here and now to be smart in our spending and keep to our spending and savings plan. Say it with me: “I will not break my budget this holiday season.”

OK, with that out of the way we can now focus on how to make that happen.

First, take a look at your financial situation and the goals you have:

  • Focus on what you really want – I’m not talking about gifts or presents here but rather items like a down payment for a house, saving for a child’s education, or building an emergency fund.

  • Create a spending and savings plan to reach your goals – Don’t wait until the New Year, after you have spent all that money over the holidays, to make a resolution to get your finances together. Do it now before you start any holiday spending or incur any unnecessary debts so you know exactly how much you can spend.

  • Take the America Saves Pledge – Those who make a commitment to themselves and their family to save usually save more than those who don’t. Make your commitment today and get monthly advice and support from America Saves while you save money.

Once you know how much you have to spend, use these tips and ideas to keep spending within your budget:

  1. Form gift exchanges – This many not work with all families, but it should definitely work with friends and coworkers. After all, reducing the number of your gifts you have to buy can save you a lot of money.

  2. Make homemade gifts – Think bath products, movie night packages, remote holders, drink koozies, and candles. Pinterest has so many great ideas to inspire you. You can knit, sew, glue, fold, stir, or recycle a handmade gift that keeps your spending low and your personal investment high.

  3. Share a skill – Instead of giving a coupon good for one dog walk or one house cleaning (though those are valuable gifts to give, too!), offer to teach your grandmother or an uncle how to use Twitter or arrange for a special night where you can teach a niece or nephew how to cook a meal.

You don’t have to let this holiday season break the bank. Remember your personal savings goals and get creative with gift giving this year to reduce spending and save money.

What You Should Know About Lung Cancer Prevention

Otmane El Rhazi from USA.gov.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness month — and with good reason. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cause of cancer among both men and women in the United States.

While not smoking will drastically cut your risk of getting lung cancer (90% of lung cancers are linked to smoking), there are additional things you can do to protect yourself.

  • Avoid second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke is nearly as bad for you as being a smoker.

  • Get your home tested for radon . Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Radon is an odorless and tasteless naturally occurring gas that comes from rocks and dirt that can get trapped in homes and buildings.

  • Above all else, don’t smoke. If you do, consider quitting — there are places you can go to get support, and medicines available to help you.

Scam Warning: IRS Impersonation

Otmane El Rhazi from USA.gov.

Scams and frauds are abundant, and here is another one of which you should be aware.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning and created this video for the American people regarding phone scammers that will call you, claiming to be the IRS. They may say you owe money, or claim that you are due a refund, and trick you into sharing private information.

The scammers are elaborate— caller ID will show up as the IRS, they use fake names and IRS badge numbers. If you don’t answer, they will leave “urgent” call back requests.

The real IRS does NOT use email, text messages, or social media to discuss personal tax issues, and they would never do the following:

  1. Call to demand immediate payment, or call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

  3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

  5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what you should do:

  • If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.

  • If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.

  • If you’ve been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments of your complaint.

What's the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Otmane El Rhazi from USA.gov.

Veterans Day will be celebrated tomorrow and sometimes we get asked what the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day is. According to the Veterans Administration:

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

Diabetic Eye Disease Rates Increase Among Hispanics

Otmane El Rhazi from USA.gov.

Approximately 3 million Hispanics at risk of losing their sight in 2030 as a result of complications from diabetes

Today, diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the United States or over 9 percent of the population. Are you one of them?

Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans represent two of the Hispanic groups with high prevalence of diabetes, although all Hispanics are at risk. All people with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, are also at risk for diabetic eye disease, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness.

Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease and includes cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, is the leading cause of blindness in adults 20–74 years of age. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), 1.2 million Hispanics have diabetic retinopathy and this number is projected to increase to approximately 3 million people by 2030.

“The longer a person has diabetes, the greater is his or her risk of developing diabetic eye disease,” said Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of NEI. “If you have diabetes, be sure to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Diabetic eye disease often has no early warning signs, but can be detected early and treated before vision loss occurs. Don’t wait until you notice an eye problem to have an exam because vision that is lost often cannot be restored.”

While all people with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, Hispanics and older adults with diabetes are two of the groups at higher risk of losing vision or going blind from it. All people with diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year to detect vision problems early.

“In fact, with early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care, people with diabetic retinopathy can reduce their risk of severe vision loss by 95 percent,” added Suber Huang, M.D., a spokesperson for the National Eye Health Education Program.

When people with diabetes maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, they can slow the development and progression of diabetic eye disease. In addition to having the dilated eye exam, people with diabetes should do the following to keep their health on TRACK:

  • Take your medications.

  • Reach and maintain a healthy weight.

  • Add physical activity to your daily routine.

  • Control your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

  • Kick the smoking habit.

For more information on diabetic eye disease and tips on finding an eye care professional or financial assistance for eye care, visit http://ift.tt/1vIPnhI or call NEI at 301–496–5248.
